how to check which update of linux using

while in war of installing oracle aps on my redhat enterprise linux ws 4, i got question – how to check which update of linux i am using. so answer is cat /etc/redhat-release
so versions ,updates in linux world is common but for new users good blog post is there at rackaid-blog http://www.rackaid.com/resources/rackaid-blog/racktips/what_version_ya_runnin/
