Normally we do tar & bzip2 in two steps, which is time consuming. But we can do in single step and it is faster as well.
1) To tar and bzip2 in single step:
$ tar cvf – ./anydir | bzip2 – >> anydir.tar.bz2
2.) I hope all know this, but just in case, to untar & unzip in one step:
$ bzcat anydir.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -
